I had money. I had cars. I had bikes. I made $1.23 million in a year. I had the supplier. We were meant to do a $20 million drug deal. When we started driving, he looked a bit suspicious, but I didn't really take notice. My son gets out of the car, says goodbye to him, and while he said goodbye, he put the gun in his chest. Boom, shot my son, pulled my son in the car, he said, “Baba,” and then I looked and he pointed the gun at me and I went like that, put my foot on the thing. Boom, boom, boom, boom. Shot me. From the hospital prison, they took me to mainstream prison, a high-security, Yatala prison. They put me in punishment within the jail.

There I was reading the Quran and I was reading Surah Al-Imran. "Every soul shall taste death, with Allah's leave, and everything is written." When I got to the point where "everything is written," the heaviness on my shoulder was gone within seconds. I was so happy. As-salamu alaykum wa (May the peace be with you), Brother Vince Focarelli. Thank you so much for accepting our invitation. We are very happy to have you with us. I want to start by asking, who is Vince Focarelli? Can you tell us briefly about your life? As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I'm very humbled and thank you for having me on your podcast. I was born in Italy in a city called Salerno.

So when I was six years old, I did my first hijra (migration) in my life from Italy to Australia, to South Australia, Adelaide. I was a gangster since I was 14 years old. I mixed with the best of the best. When I say the best of the best, bosses of nightclubs and everything else. I've been involved in the gang world and deep into it to the point where I became the boss of a state, of the most notorious criminal biker group in Australia. If I was a criminal for many, many, many years, up to the point where my stepson died in my arms. So after that, I embraced Islam. So how was your life before Islam in regards to faith? What were you believing in? I was a Roman Catholic.

I always believed in God. Even in prison, I prayed. I did my cross and I prayed. We would wear crosses. Even the mafia are very religious, believe it or not. You know, they'll go to see the priest at times to confess. Some have the guilt. But we had the best of both worlds. You would go and confess. They'd tell you to do Hail Marys and things like that. And then as soon as you walked out the church, you're back on your pager. "I'll meet you here." "Selling drugs there." So for us, in the Christian, in the Roman Catholic faith, it was culture and tradition. It was part of our DNA to be like that, you know? And people don't realize that.

We were made to believe that if we go see the priest, you know, the door you opens up the little window, say, “Father, I have sinned. I've shot a man. I didn't kill him. I've sold drugs. I want to change, but you know, I've done this and that.” “My son, thank you for coming. Jesus loves you. Do me 15 Hail Marys. Do that.” And sometimes you put charity in the box and you're done. Dead easy. And you thought you were forgiven? Yes. We were made to believe that, yes. How was your life before Islam? The environments you were in, your habits, your interests, what were your days like? As an Italian, you grow up knowing that the mafia runs the world. Now, as an Italian, I'm patriotic.

So we put our rings on our fingers. You know, we're part of the mafia. The Italians are part of the mafia. We have mafia family members, gangsters. We run the drug trade. We run the politics. As a 14-year-old on the street selling drugs, I would walk in nightclubs where the owners or adult industries, strip joints, things like that. So I would not wait in a nightclub. The bouncers will protect me. If the police walked into that place, they would lose their license. I was only 14, 15, 16, 17. You had to be 18 or over. But I had the privilege to be respected by all the nightclubs on that street. You know, I would take arms to be prepared to shoot the enemy.

Every time that I've been shot, it's been point-blank range. Not from a distance. It has been point-blank range, yeah? So, I have a bullet lodged here in my head. So that's the... they cut it out and took it out. So I was shot there. I was shot here. It came out of here. I was shot through here, broke two ribs. It should have gone through my heart, but it came out of my chest. One bullet severed my skin, almost near my nervous system of my spine. I would have been paralyzed for life. It didn't. It went when I ducked. The other one is here. I got shot in the leg and shot at. And there was an attempt with a bombing. So they put a bomb... they were trying to put a bomb near my house.

So when they took the bomb, I was 20 meters away from the car. So at night, in the morning about 5:00, 5:30 in the morning, they took the bomb out of the car. As soon as he touched the bomb, boom. So I had money. I had cars. I had bikes. I had my business. I had drugs and nightclub respect and girls and all the rest. All the bling-bling you can think of. I was at that level now, you know? It felt good, don't get me wrong. The feeling felt good. Powerful and all the rest of it. But the strange part was when I was returning home and I was driving on my own going back home, I felt a sense of emptiness. All the time.

But it was that time when you drive back home or when you went to bed or when you got up. You had your wife and kids, but you felt a sense of emptiness. But I had it. I made $1.23 million in a year back then. That's a lot of money. And you spent it, you know? Versace clothes, limousines, cars, this, that. But the after was just emptiness was very, very vivid. How did you first hear about Islam and how did your journey towards Islam begin? When I had the fallout with the Hells Angels, I formed with a certain Iraqi from Perth. I think they were called Scorpion Kings or something.

I'm not quite sure, but they heard about me and they wanted to come to Adelaide, do business and join forces with me. Now, I know this is going to sound crazy and it feels like I've lived in a cave, but I never knew about Islam or Muslims. I never knew about Islam. Really, I didn't. I know it sounds crazy. So these Arabs came, make a long story short, when they came and got together with me, we had our same enemies. Went out to a nightclub, packed to the rafters. And certain things will happen, shooting, gunfire, fights, and we'd go back to their home and they're wearing these long clothes, they did wudu (ablution), I didn't know, they're washing themselves, and they started salah (prayer).

Thinking, what's going on? He goes, "they're praying." "What's the prayer?" "They're Muslims." Oh, okay. I never knew they were Muslims. I said, what's that? He goes, you know, and this and that. And I was in the lounge area, first night, and they started talking about Ali, Hamza, the Prophet, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And now I was really intrigued. They were talking about warriors, Ali the warrior, Islam, how much they love God, how faithful they were to God. Their faith was everything. I'm thinking, wow, and these guys are warriors. And then they spoke about the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. What a story.

We only knew that Jesus Christ was the last one for us, you know? The prophet, the Messiah, the Lord. It's in the Bible, you know? And then they started speaking about Jesus Christ, (peace be upon him). I said to them, I stood up. I said, “Excuse me, whoa whoa whoa. What do you know about Jesus Christ? That's my Lord. That's my, you know, Messiah.” I should talk. I mean, I know about the Bible. “No, no, no, Vince, no. We love him.” “Huh?" "We adore him. We love him so much. We respect him. We follow him. Mother Mary is in the... Virgin Mary, the story of the Bible...” They started talking about it in the Quran.

And what amazed me is that there's one chapter of Mother Mary, the whole chapter of Mother Mary in the Quran. In the Bible, Mother Mary, peace and blessings be upon her, was mentioned four or five times if I'm not mistaken. Just mentioned. This is a chapter of Mother Mary, you know, the mother of the believers, right? And Jesus Christ, the story, and the more they spoke, I kid you not, it was like a child looking at my favorite movie or show. Like I was intrigued. It was at that moment that I believe in my heart, regardless whether the intoxicants were there or not, that Allah granted me hidayah (guidance). And I was so intrigued.

Now, the problem with the Roman Catholics, right, is that we have a tradition and culture we follow. When you read the Bible, I've read the Bible. I'm not saying that I'm a Bible master. I know certain things from the Bible. For example, Jesus Christ said to his people, “Oh my people, don't worship me. I'm not your Lord.” Clear cut. It's simple, yeah? Okay. But we worship him. So we read the Bible, but we just read the Bible. We weren't thinking. It was just faith, culture, traditions. Jesus Christ said, “Don't eat pork.” Catholics eat pork. We don't eat pork. Jesus Christ said, “Abstain from alcohol.” It opens the gates to every major sin.

Jesus Christ said in the, in the Bible, “Do not worship, do not bow down, do not pray to any form of statues, idols, or beings, any deities from the heaven, the ground, and the water below. Pray directly to our Father, the Lord, God, because God is a jealous God.” We pray to the cross, Mother Mary, baby Jesus. But this is what we do. So anyway, make a long story, they were talking about Jesus Christ. They were talking about the Bible. So now, everything started making sense. So now, second night, third night, the Prophet Muhammad, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stories, touching, right? Ali, they call him Ali the magnificent.

And he was magnificent, you know, mashallah (Allah has willed it), may Allah be pleased with him. But I was so intrigued, so, so interested in this, in this story. And then the Bible started contradicting. I mean, we have to carry, that they teach us that the devil, Shaytan, Iblis (Satan), carried Jesus Christ across the desert for 40 days and 40 nights and then said, he said to Jesus Christ, which, this is what I mean by reading the Bible, right? He said, “Denounce your faith to your God.” This is to Jesus, yeah? “Denounce your faith to your God and give your allegiance to me.” Does that make him God or the prophet of God? You see what I'm trying to say to you?

There are so many things in the, in the, in the Bible that tells you Jesus was not God. Even Jesus said, “Worship my Father, your Father, my Lord, and your Lord.” So all these things started popping up. I was getting frustrated. How dare they lie to us, you know? On the third morning, I was walking out. He opened the door, I closed the door. I said, “I'm done.” I said, “How do I become Muslim?” I said, “There's only one God, Allah. And that Jesus Christ was a messenger, the prophet, born from Mary.” These two Muslims got excited now.

“Repeat after me, Vince.” “You ready?” I said, “Yeah, I'm ready.” “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah." I'll repeat that, yeah? (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His messenger).” Look how long it is, yeah? I said it first time without any mistakes. Really. It was like flowing river. I didn't ask him, “Stop, this, that.” It wasn't, he didn't do it in breaks. Like he did it. He said, “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah... (I bear witness that there is no god)" ” It was on. He goes, “No, brother, you said it.” Give me a hug.

“I love you.” “Takbir (God is the greatest)!” “Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest)!” I said, “Really? Am I a Muslim?” I said. “Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest),” I said. And all I knew was as-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you) and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest). When I put my head to the ground, and tears were flowing out of my eyes, I felt a sense of peace. I genuinely felt Allah's presence. I don't want to sound like I'm doing shirk (polytheism) here, please forgive me, but I felt that He was looking after me. But that's when I realized that, yeah, Allah was there. Did your whole life change suddenly after you became a Muslim? What was the turning point in your life?

If you want to be a part of this good deed, donate to Towards Eternity and don't miss this golden opportunity. Did your whole life change suddenly after you became a Muslim? What was the turning point in your life? So, I've been shot on multiple, uh, many times, a few times, five times at different times. The last one, my stepson lost his life. He got shot through the heart. He, uh, we were meant to do a $20 million drug deal that I said after this, if this goes well, I'm done with that life.

$20 million is a lot of money. I had the supplier at that time from Queensland. We were in South Australia. He was interested in buying it. But I think he wasn't interested in doing it at all. I think he was just interested in assassinating me. So he allowed, he made me believe that we can talk for the deal. So I went to see him, pick him up, and we went for a drive. So anyway, when we started driving, he looked a bit suspicious, but I didn't really take notice. So when he got out of the car, when we dropped him off, so he was trying to kill me. So when I went to drop him off, he said, “Drop me off here at the park area.” So I thought, okay, it was normal.

My son gets out of the car, says, says goodbye to him, told you. They're meant to be friends, yeah? And while he said goodbye, put the gun in his chest, boom. Shot my son. So I, I pulled my son in the car. He said, “Baba (dad).” And then I looked and he pointed the gun at me and I went like that, put my foot on the thing. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Shot me. And I didn't feel I got shot. I remember my son. 'Cause the coroner said he died instantly. He was like faceless. His green eyes and... So what I was driving... I was grabbing his mouth and I was trying to resuscitate him, you know?

And then I was trying to resuscitate him and I called the ambulance because I can't make it to the hospital on time. So I said, “Look, meet me halfway.” So I did that. And I kept trying to resuscitate him. He looked, I, he was, he did, he died, but you know, part of you didn't want to believe that. Um, when I spoke to the ambulance, I started spitting blood. So I put the phone down, sorry. I spit, all over my dashboard, and kept spitting. Now the blood that I spat, I realized now I've been shot too, and it's coming from my lungs. So now I, I put myself in a position to say, “Ya Allah (O Allah), forgive me,” you know?

And I asked Allah to, um, please, I begged Him to take La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah) for my stepson. May he die with that. Please grant him this La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah) 'cause he passed away. And I said to Allah, “Forgive me for everything. Please take my La ilaha illallah.” And driving, then the ambulance come. I get out of the car to go to my son. The police stopped me. “Vince, please.” So I fall. My ribs start hurting now. Now I realized that I've been hit in the ribs. So they put me in the ambulance and then they take me to hospital. The coroner said that my son passed away because the bullet went straight through his heart.

And, uh, tried, he died protecting his father. He was a Muslim. So, and, uh, at this time, I was bullet-riddled. I tried my best in the hospital. I was chained down to, on the phone with the court, with the, with the, with the trial, with the Supreme Court, District Court judge to grant me bail so I can go to my son's funeral, to wash him. To wash him and be part of his ritual. So the hardest thing for me in my life after that point was to watch his janaza (funeral) on TV in the hospital bed, a prison hospital bed. It was the hardest thing for me. I, I had to deal with it. But wallahi (by Allah), the hardest thing I've ever had to feel in my life.

So I saw him being buried and things like that. The judge would not let me out. My life changed in prison. From the hospital prison, they took me to mainstream prison, a high security, Yatala prison. They put me in punishment within the jail. So it's segregated. But it was three months into the situation, 10 months or three months into the situation, two and a half months, that I was reading the Quran and I, uh, I was reading Surah Al-Imran, ayah (verse) 145. "Every soul shall taste death, with Allah's leave, and everything is written. If you want the good things of this life, Allah will provide for you.

If you want the good things of the next life, Allah will provide for you." But the good life and provide and the next life and provide, I never read that part of the ayah (verse). When I got to the point where everything is written, the knot that I had here of anxiousness, guilt, depression of my son, I'm telling you... Not revenge? ...was released. I could breathe. The heaviness on my shoulder was gone within seconds. I bawled out crying like I've never cried in my life. Not of sadness. I was so happy. I was so happy. Didn't take it all away, the sadness, but it released me.

It unchained me from such darkness that the way I can explain it to you is, you know when you go walking on a mountain, on the hill, it's a struggle, right? My mountain was like death straight. And I would crawl my nails, my teeth to get to the top. There was a rope for me to hold on to though. And every time I look down, these wolves were jumping up with their teeth to devour me. Those wolves were my emotions, was my mental health, was my health. That rope was the Quran. I chose to hold on to that rope, brother. And it took me 45 minutes, almost to an hour to thank God. I wanted to thank Him. I wanted to thank Him so much, you know? It took me 45 minutes.

The tears would not stop, but I was so... you know when you love someone... and you're so content and grateful for their help? We're talking about dunya (world), that you cry, you know, to them. "So thank you so much, you took me out." This is the creator. I felt His presence. It was at that moment that my relationship with Allah was concrete, was done and dusted. I made this du'a (supplication). I thanked Him. I said, “Thank you, Allah.” I said to Allah, I put my hands up and I said, “Ya Rabbi, ya Allah (O my Lord, O Allah), forgive me for everything.” I begged Him. I said, “Please, Allah.” And here I am. I've been a Muslim for 15 years. I'm not perfect.

I'm not a scholar, sheikh (scholar), or claim to be any of that. My, my knowledge is lame. I love Allah. I love Rasulullah (peace be upon him). I love the deen (religion), the sahabah (companions). I'm Omar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). These are the men we should follow. It's a shame that our youth now that are getting complete lost in this world. So that was my journey. That was my turning point. In some of your posts, we can see your mother has, she also converted to Islam, and what was her position from beginning to end of your story? Ah, you just can't help yourself, huh? This is a touchy subject for me, but I'm going to do my very best, inshallah (God willing).

My mother, I'll say this as quick as possible we can. I can't even look at her photos. I miss her so much, but um, may Allah grant her Firdous Jannah (highest level of heaven). Ameen (Amen). My mother and me were just best friends. She got, before I got deported, while I was getting deported, I had 28 days to the situation. But while I got deported, went to the hospital, the doctors, hospital, and she got diagnosed with stage four cancer, so again, the spots started getting bigger and eventually it was starting to spread. So with my, uh, with my mother, I said to the doctor, “Don't say anything to her about her cancer.” And then she came to Malaysia. I got her to come to Malaysia in October.

So when she came there, I thought, wow, I got, I was emotional. I got my mom here. Okay, got the Bible. “Mom, in the Bible, it says Jesus said, ‘Don't worship him.’ He said, ‘Do not worship me. I'm not your Lord, Mom.’” I said, “Do the Muslims worship him?” She said, “No.” “Then why are you?” And every day I would say this. Every, every day, uh, I would put, “Jesus Christ said, ‘Don't drink alcohol. Don't eat pork.’” “How did Jesus pray, Mom?” All from the Bible. Nothing to do with the Quran at all, right? On a daily basis.

And every day, every day, “Mom, I love you.” “Mom, jazaakallahu khairan (may Allah reward you with goodness).” And then at the end, it got to a part where I said, “Mom, do you think Jesus Christ?” “No. You know what, son? Jesus Christ was not God.” Boom. My heart. I'm sorry, I'm getting emotional now, you know. And she said the shahada (declaration of faith). You wouldn't believe this. She said, “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah" without no mistakes. I couldn't believe it. I was recording her. I'm in tears. I'm recording her. Look how Allah loves her so much. To the point where she became Muslim and Allah gave her the full monty of her death.

She died peacefully in her sleep, in tahajjud (late-night prayer) time, just before Fajr (dawn prayer), on a Friday, on Ramadan, the last 10 days of Ramadan. She was prayed janaza (funeral prayer) on on the Friday, in a brand new mosque, and she was buried in a brand new… If Brother Vince hadn't converted to Islam, what would he be doing right now? Um, if you want me to answer that honestly, I would be either dead in the ground, assassinated, or 30 years plus in prison, life imprisonment for assassinating him or someone else in that life. But Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest), Allah chose me for Islam, bro.

Wallahi (by Allah), it took me from darkness to light, gave me wisdom, knowledge, hikmah (wisdom). Ah, what a life. What a beautiful life as a Muslim. Wallahi (by Allah), wallahi (by Allah). What impressed you the most about the Prophet, (peace be upon him)? Everything of the Prophet, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is magnificent and spectacular in every aspect of the word, in the highest and most beautiful way. There is no man on this earth, no creation that has been ever created, as perfect, as beautiful, as kind, as loving as him. He is the real deal to be truly a good human being, a role model. Can we be like him? Impossible.

But the one thing that stood out from everything for me, I was reading his biography, the split moon, the moon split, you know? And I got reading and, wow. Just from his age, everything was just, I mean, there's nothing, nothing that we cannot be touched by in such a heavy way, you know? But the one thing that had me crying so much, he was on his deathbed. Can you imagine you're about to die? Imagine you're feeling, coming in and out of consciousness. He said to his sahabah (companions), “Take me to my people. I want to speak to them.” And they said to him, “No, Prophet (peace be upon him), you can't. You know, you're not feeling well, this and that.” You know, they pretty much forbade him.

He demanded to go. And I remember at this point when I was reading, they were describing how they were carrying the Prophet on one arm of each other, and his feet were dragging. He couldn't even move. Look at the love that he had for his ummah (community). I can't even get out of bed when I feel nauseous. You know that horrible feeling? This man, this beautiful prophet ﷺ, this creation, no matter what he was feeling, he wanted to speak to his people for the very last time. So when they spoke about his feet dragging, imagine like that, and bringing him before the people, I bawled down in tears.

They sacrificed everything you could possibly think of for Rasulullah (peace Allah be upon him), the sahabah (companions), things that you cannot imagine, for the sake of Allah and for the sake of this ummah (community). So what should we do to be grateful to them, you know? So that was the, the part that really, everything touched me, but that part touched me the most. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, when he, he was the first one to say as-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you). You still see the back of his molar. But when he was on the field fighting for the sake of Allah, he was an absolute lion, warrior, you know?

Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, Hamza, the lion of Islam. Come on, Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, Hussein, Hasan, Abu Ubaidah, Omar ibn Khattab, Uthman, Abu Bakr, come on. Are we really following Hollywood and music industries? These are the men. God. And there are many young people who live who look up to this lifestyle that you had, you used to have. What would you like to say to those people? The ones who seek happiness in this, in this life? There is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. It's a myth. And I'm going to give you something of craziness from the, from the Quran. This is a joke.

There's no loyalty in that lifestyle at all. Loyalty is the one that makes money the most, and then if you're not good at making that money, you're a liability. But I want to say this from the Quran. This will put things in perspective for everyone. If you have wisdom, or you have a sense of sensibility, a little bit of nobility and understanding to be open-minded, this is the ayah (verse) for all the criminals out there. This is the ayah for all the billionaires out there. This is the ayah to all the kings and everyone, the oppressed, all the ones that want to make money, whether it's that lifestyle or not, but want to go into this life, I'll give you the ayah.

Allah says in the Quran, it's directing it at the, at the people. "Even if you came to me on the Day of Judgment with all the riches of the world," now imagine, Allah says all of it, on the Day of Judgment, you come to me with it and you hold it as ransom, "Please Allah, give me jannah (heaven) or send me back to redo it." Allah says, "There is no avail. On this day is the Day of Judgment." You're finished. So what are we chasing? What money are you chasing? What, what millions do you want? What billions do you want? What Ferrari you want to drive? So what projects are you doing right now, brother?

My NGO is called Sahabah, which is the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, 99, which is the 99 names of Allah, attributes, names of Allah. And on the back of our t-shirts, we have the hadith (prophetic tradition) where I said to you earlier that the best of you are the ones that bring most benefit to the rest of mankind. So we try to make sure they do kickboxing, Muay Thai boxing, get into the self-defense. We do charities and things like that. We fight for the community of the Muslims in every aspect of the way. The deen (religion) is everything for them, for us, Palestine, we do things to, uh, bring food trucks there. That's the things we do.

Uh, what would you like to do to people who put ketchup on spaghetti pasta? Well, I'd like to do to people that put ketchup on a plate of pasta spaghetti bolognese, arrest them for life and throw away the key. -Arrest them. -You put their face on the ketchup maybe? If they, no, no, no, put them in jail for the rest of their life. Is it a crime? A crime. Don't, don't put pineapple on pizzas in Italy, and don't put ketchup on your sauces in Italy. All right? I believe that should be locked up in a facility. Maybe not even in jail, maybe some mental institution to, to work out what is wrong with them.

How do you put tomato sauce on a plate of spaghetti where the chef has sliced up the garlic, put olive oil in the frying pan, sizzled it to caramelization with the tomato paste to extract the acid so you don't get heartburn, then puts in there the basil, then the sauce, then the salt, then the ingredients and does a 20-minute ritual. And then after that 20-minute ritual, he cooks it for another 30 minutes to make that sauce taste, and he tastes it from time to time to get that flavor, works hard on this. And you come along with a tomato paste with sugar in it and put it on top of the spaghetti. Prison, jail, life in prison. That's it.

And pineapple on pizza, working on smashing rocks at some farm for at least 15 years. Fruit on a pizza. Ya Allah (O Allah). Would you like to say something in Italian just to make, like, since you have an Italian heritage? My Italian is not that good, but I try to do the best that I can. First of all, I want to say hello to-Cavi di Tireni, Salerno, my family, the Focareli, the Savastani. Many kisses to all of you. And for the Italians who are in Italy, for those who have... intelligence in their minds, forget about Roman Catholicism, forget about this Christianity. With all due respect, take a Qur'an, read it, and come into the lives of Muslims.

And you will see that your life will always be in peace. Al those who are my family, all my friends in Italy, become Muslims. -Takbir (God is the greatest)! -Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest)
